Selous Great Water Lodge is situated on the fringes of the largest wildlife sanctuary in the whole of Africa. You will be able to see thousands of large wild animals moving across this spectacular terrain that is less visited by most of the holiday makers in Tanzania. There is actually no traffic jam of safari vehicles with visitors queuing to see a predator here! The lodge is right beside the mighty Rufiji River, lifeblood of the Selous. Our location on the high riverbank is truly spectacular, especially at sunset as the vast expanse of water turns crimson and purple. Comfort and security are combined with the sheer excitement of being in such a place. And note that this area of the Selous is the only place in Tanzania where you can enjoy a safari by river through a game area. River safaris are our speciality.
We are a small, friendly lodge and pride ourselves on our genuine hospitality, offering a personal service to guests, and all at a very affordable price. From the outskirts of Dar es Salaam we are under five hours away by road. Otherwise you can fly to a nearby airstrip, may be on your way from / to the Mafia Island or Zanzibar. Whichever way, we can arrange it all for our guests.
Among the activities offered here are: walks along the river bank, game drives, forest walks, boat safaris as well as cultural visits into the villages to have an insight into the lifestyle of the local people and see how they are living. The different activities are led by one of our professional guides. However in case you wish to loosen up, we have a resting area having hammocks, so there you can view crocodiles plus hippos as you enjoy a cold drink served from the well stocked bars having an assortment of drinks.
Accommodation is offered in thatched lodges having en-siute bathrooms, 2 family rooms, plus 2 luxury safari tents placed on elevated platforms that offer stunning vistas over the water hole and further on across the distant grassland. Dinner is normally served beneath the stars and served at a candle-lit table near the banks of the river. We also welcome couples on Honeymoon! We are glad to also to cater for guests who are vegetarians as well as others who have unique dietary needs. We offer fresh fish on our menu plus roasted duck which are among our specialities that a well prepared by our expert chef who also prepares home-made delicious soups. Following your dinner you may choose to unwind by the fireplace as you listen to the sound of the flowing river as well as the distant animal sounds, this is really a serene experience worth enjoying.
The tents are placed on elevated wooden platforms which are 2 meters above the ground, thatched and a large private verandah that rewards guests with breathtaking views of the beautiful surrounding. There is a water hole approximately 30 meters from your tents. Each of the tents is really large and in fact a family of 5 people can be accommodated in one of these tents.
